Lung Cancer Treatments

Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer occurring globally. And, there is a specific type of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer which constitutes a major proportion of lung cancer cases. The reason why lung cancer cases are usually fatal is that it is difficult to detect in early stages. There are numerous methods being used to treat lung cancer. However, research is being carried out to find the cure for lung cancer.

The conventional way of treating lung cancer entails surgery followed by either chemotherapy or radiation or a combination of both.

However, the newer treatment options for the cure of lung cancer are:

Molecular Targeted Therapy

In this type of treatment, molecularly targeted drugs fight tumor cells with mutated genes that drive cancer. Patients with non-small cell lung cancer are treated with targeted drugs. Research is underway to identify more molecular targets for drugs.

Immune Checkpoint blocker

This treatment is used effectively for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. These drugs target the systems that restrict the body’s immune T-cells from fighting tumors.

The chief drawback of both these methods is that after a certain span of time, the patient becomes resistant to these treatments.

Now researchers feel that the treatments need to be more personalized. It is important to match the right patient to the right medicine at the right time. Research is also being done to find ways of detecting lung cancer. The cure for lung cancer will become easier if the disease is detected early.
