Signs and Symptoms of Head and Neck Cancer

Head and neck cancer is a condition that begins with nose, throat, sinuses or mouth. It occurs in the cells that line the surfaces of these body parts. There are different types of head and neck cancer treatments, each having different symptoms.

Oral Cavity Cancer:
This is a condition which affects the lips and the inside of the mouth including gums, the inside of your cheeks etc. The symptoms of this condition include red or white patches in the mouth, gums and tongue. The condition can also cause swelling in the jaw, bleeding or pain in the mouth.
Pharynx Cancer
Another name of the throat is pharynx which includes your tonsils, the back of the tongue, soft palate etc.
The symptoms of cancer of the pharynx are:
  • Having problems in breathing
  • Painful swallowing
  • Neck or throat pain
  • Pain in the ear
Larynx Cancer
Larynx is known as the voice box and is responsible for holding your vocal cords and epiglottis. Larynx cancer is marked by:
  • Painful swallowing
  • Pain in the ear
  • Changes in your voice
Nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses Cancer:
The space inside your nose is known as the nasal cavity. Small spaces in the bones of the head around the nose are known as paranasal sinuses.
You should look for the following symptoms of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses cancer:
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Blocked sinuses
  • Headaches
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Pain in the teeth
Salivary glands 
These glands are present in the lower part of the mouth and are responsible for the production of saliva.
Signs and symptoms of salivary gland cancer are:
  • Swelling under the chin
  • Inflammation around the jawbone
  • Numb face muscles
  • Pain in the face, chin or neck that does not subside
Each type of head and neck cancer has specific signs and symptoms. However, there are some general symptoms of this condition which are as follows:
  • A lump in the neck
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Blood in the spit
The signs and symptoms vary according to the type and severity of cancer. However, it is important to seek timely treatment if you want to cure the condition completely.
